Therapy for Filipinos/Filipino Americans

Therapy for Filipinos/Filipino Americans

Are you struggling with anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns but hesitant to seek help?

You’re not alone. Mental health stigma is still prevalent in many Filipino communities, making it difficult for individuals to open up about their struggles and seek the support they need.   As a Filipino clinical psychologist, I understand the unique challenges faced by our community. I’m here to offer a safe and supportive space where you can explore your emotions, overcome mental health stigma, and go from just surviving to thriving.

These are some of the common reasons you may be holding you back from seeking help and how I can help you address them:
  1. Fear of judgment: Many Filipinos feel ashamed or embarrassed to seek help for mental health concerns. I offer a non-judgmental and confidential space where you can share your thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism.  Moreover, as someone who also struggled with mental health issues as a young teen growing up in the Philippines, with little to no resources, I empathize more and do not look at these issues through the lens of psychopathology.
  1. Cultural sensitivity: I understand the importance of family, respect for elders in Filipino culture, and sensitivity to “Kapwa” or others.  I can work with you to find a balance between our cultural values and your individual needs for mental health care.
  2. Language barriers: If you prefer to communicate in Tagalog, I can provide therapy services in the language you feel most comfortable with.

Taking the first step toward mental health care can be daunting, but it’s also an act of courage and self-care. If you’re ready to begin your journey toward healing and growth, I’m here to support you every step of the way.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Let’s work together to break the mental health stigma and promote well-being in the Filipino community.

How Can Therapy Help You?
  1. To break the stigma: Mental health stigma is still prevalent in many Filipino communities, preventing people from seeking help when needed.  There are Filipinos who still think that therapy or counseling is for the “crazy” or “may tama sa utak” or for the loko-loko or loka-loka.”  By seeking therapy, you’re breaking down the barriers and showing others that it’s okay to prioritize your mental health.
  2. To gain insight and self-awareness: Therapy is a safe and confidential space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. You can make meaningful changes in your life and relationships by gaining insight into yourself.
  3.  To develop coping skills: Life can be stressful, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed or anxious at times. Therapy can give you the tools and skills to cope with stress, manage your emotions, and improve your resilience.
  4.  To improve relationships: Our relationships with family, friends, and significant others can impact our mental health. In therapy, you can work through conflicts or communication issues and learn how to build healthier and more fulfilling relationships.
  5.  To prioritize self-care: As Filipinos, we’re often taught to put others or our Kapwa’s needs before our own. But taking care of your mental health is an act of self-care that can benefit you and those around you. By investing in therapy, you prioritize your well-being and set a positive example for others.
