Even with the high success rate, roughly around 2 out of 3 people continue to suffer and do not seek appropriate treatment. Many avoid getting treatment due to several factors such as the stigma of mental illness, fear of being labeled “crazy” or “incompetent”, believing it’s a character flaw, denial, unavailability of mental health care in their area, fear of how the treatment will be, etc. Some people even believe that they can just “snap out of it”, “try harder”, or if they “pray harder”. Regardless of the reason, untreated depression can lead to health issues such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Sometimes, it can also lead to substance use, unemployment, divorce, dropping out of school, and suicide.
Do you remember the commercial portraying that depression is about having a chemical imbalance in the brain and that the only thing you need to feel well is to take medication? While medication can help, the best treatment, particularly for moderate to severe depression, is a combination of psychotherapy (particularly in the form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy) and medication. For mild depression, Cognitive Behavior Therapy alone may be all you need. I can evaluate the severity of your depression and discuss the best options for you. I also encourage you to get evaluated by your primary care physician to rule out medical conditions that can result in depression such as thyroid problem.
